The “MyJihad” educational campaign was launched in Chicago today with bus ads. “My jihad is modesty is not a weakness.” “My jihad is freedom and peace for Syria.” “My jihad is to build friendships across the aisles.” Not the kind of jihad you were expecting?

Most Americans are still confused by the word “jihad.” In Arabic, the word translates as a noun meaning “struggle.” Most Muslims take it to mean striving for a virtuous life (when temptations abound to lead you off-track) or to speak up against injustice (and we know there is plenty of that around). The word is used in the Quran 41 times, never to mean fighting.
